Did you know that Mugdock Country Park is accessible to everyone?  We have a number of items that you can borrow for free, please share this post! :
- We have 2 motorised mobility scooters that make getting along the paths here a breeze.  They are extremely easy to use and we give you all the guidance you need.  In these, a trip round the whole country park is possible.
- We have 2 manual wheelchairs which can also be borrowed for no charge, they would allow access around the visitor centre and down to the garden centre, but are a little bumpy over some of the rougher paths within the park.
- We have fully adapted toilets in the courtyard.
- PLUS, we have an absolutely fantastic ‘Duet’ bike, which is so much fun.  Its suitable for one rider and either a child or small adult at the front. If you want to have a try at any of these items or borrow them for your visit here you can do so at no cost.

So I wanted to talk about going to gigs and music festivals as someone with limited mobility. Basically, every event is different but almost every main event nowadays makes provision for those with limited mobility. How to get this: – Usually, to access this requires calling up a specific phone number . Details are available from the main ticket provider but some common important ones include 0844…8471655 ticket master 08448717677 ambassador tickets (theatre royal and kings) Be prepared to wait a long time and perhaps call back again and again. However, there is usually less demand for disabled tickets so you can usually get them Eventually. – Proof of eligibility may be required such as at Department of work and pensions letter
Examples of some of the adaptations that can be made include: Access to disabled parking Reserved accessible seating with a companion. This is often on a raised viewing platform which is actually pretty good. At the gig I was at this weekend nondisabled people kept trying to sneak in. Disabled accessible Portakabins reserved just for your use. Tends to be much cleaner than the ones used for the masses Overall, there is really good support available if you do want to keep going to gigs sometimes it requires just a bit more planning and determination

TGI Friday’s – Glasgow fort

So I thought I would finally review something not in the west end of Glasgow! I’ve reviewed the fort before before but there is a new addition in the form of TGI Friday’s and the Vue  Cinema at the back end by Asda living. TGI Friday’s has a pretty standard format and this branch is no different. So you can expect the usual fare of yummy burgers, wraps and main dish…es . There’s also a great range of cocktails and desserts. Be sure to checkout their special offers as some of the set menus can be really good value
The science bit – As usual the fort has ample disabled parking spaces available and there is level access to the venue. Though there are two sets of heavy double doors – There is a clean disabled toilet available. There is a level access to this and some of the seating and bar. However some tables are elevated and some are in booths which can make it difficult to accommodate a wheelchair or for those who find it difficult to slide in along the row. Overall, a really accessible venue but be prepared to wait a little longer for a table if you’re trying to avoid a booth http://m.tgifridays.co.uk/

Siempre – Dumbarton Road

This unusual bike shop and cafe prides itself on only stocking local brands so what you won’t find any Diet Coke but you will find a great selection of brunches, and deli type sandwiches and cakes. It’s a vast space for the west end with an outdoor courtyard at the rear. The science bit There is level access to the venue through two entrances one from Dumbarton Road which enters through the bike shop or through the tunnel to kelvinhall Underground station. This enters at the counter and there is a short ramp down to the tables… Both entrances to the courtyard require negotiation of steps. The internal entrance has four steps and the external entrance to the tunnel has a very steep concrete step with drop-off and is not recommended Within the cafe there is level access to the tables,decent room to move around, movable seating and a disabled toilet Parking is very difficult in this part of the west end and it can be difficult at busy times to even pull up outside Overall, this is a great cafe for a weekend brunch and midweek lunch if your requirement is level access. For those who wish to fine al fresco or would require parking outside it may be less suitable

Oscar and hollies -Broomhill

Oscar and hollies is a small local cafe in Broomhill. It serves a simple range of sandwiches, cakes, teas coffees and milkshakes. It has a really nice child friendly atmosphere, bright ikea type colour scheme and is surrounded by a range of eclectic local shops including a florist, gift shop children’s clothes and vintage designer shop.
…The science bit
The main entrance is accessible via one large step. However there is ramp access via Marlborough Road entrance.
Inside there is ample room to move around with moveable seating. There is also level access to outside seating.
There is a clean disabled toilet available
Parking in this area can be difficult which is a drawback However, this is mostly a good accessible local cafe

balbirs – Byres Rd

This classy Indian restaurant offers a great range of authentic Indian dishes in sleek surroundings.
The science bit
- There is excellent disabled access with level access to the venue and a ramp up to the level of the main seating and disabled toilet. Note: a small group of tables are on the second level accessed by a small staircase. there’s no disabled access to this level so specify when booking one of the tables on the main level if required.  – The seating is mostly movable and so could easily accommodate a wheelchair.
- There is a disabled toilet available on the first level where the tables are.
- The staff are lovely, friendly and accommodating.
- It is possible to pull up outside the venue and parking is usually available on the streets although a short distance may have to be walked
Overall, this is a great and accessible Indian restaurant close to Byres Road – well recommended

Glasgow film theatre

Glasgow film theatre
is undergoing a process of renovation to add another screen and to entries these of disabled access ability. This will provide three screens accessible by a central lift. There will also be accessible toilets and cafe areas.
While the building work is going on in their adapted toilet is being refurbished and the usual lift has to be accessed from the outside not its normal position. However this may change as the building works progressive so I would advise anyone going in the foreseeable future to phone ahead to check
But again hopefully it’s signs of progress

Glasgow Theatre royal refurbishment

As some of you may know I am an avid theatregoer. But the set up in Glasgow often isn’t ideal. There is good news however. In time for the Commonwealth Games Glasgow Theatre royal is undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment. Part of the aim of this to increase the accessibility of the venue with the installation of lifts providing wheelchair access to every floor. Hopefully this will mean greater accessibility to the cheaper ticket prices to those with mobility issues

It will take around 18 months but work has already begun and the theatre will only close for a three month period in early 2014. Sadly its not exactly imminent but it is an huge step in the right direction

Avenue G – Byres rd

This small New York style deli/cafe serves a really interesting range of light dishes.As well as a permanent selection of sandwiches, salads and home-made cakes there is also a rotation of daily soups, tartlets and hot …dishes. This white, large, glass fronted spot is almost always busy and the staff are friendly. The science bit There is level access to the venue and a disabled toilet but space in this venue is very cramped. There is a mezzanine level and at times it can be difficult to get a table on the ground floor – booking is not possible. Parking again is difficult as it is not possible to park outside, the nearest parking is off the side street. Overall this venue is suitable for those with mobility impairment or those with a wheelchair if able to go at quiet times. http://avenue-g.com/

Tribeca – Dumbarton Road

Tribeca is a small American-style cafe serving some of the best brunch around. It offers heaped plates of giant sized waffles, pancakes, omelettes, full cooked breakfast along with milkshakes, ice cream shakes cakes …and sandwiches. It is reasonably priced, the staff are friendly and it is almost always busy. The science bit There is a significant step up to the front door and inside the space is very cramped. However all the tables are on the level as is the toilet. Parking is also an issue as you cannot park outside although drop-off/collection is possible. The nearest parking is about one block away on a side Street. Overall this venue is not suitable for wheelchair users due to the step and limited space but may be suitable for those of the limited mobility http://www.tribecacafe.com/
